What to do for water damage:
- Bacteria growth begins in the first few hours if they are not properly cared for—action should be taken immediately.
- Shut off the flow of water at the source.
- Mop or blot up as much of the water as you can.
- Move area rugs or other un-attached floor coverings to dry spaces.
- Floor-length curtains are in danger of being damaged as well. Lift them well above the wet surfaces.
- Place foil or specially designed blocks under furniture legs to lift them off of wet surfaces.
- Wipe furniture, prop up wet furniture cushions for even drying and place aluminum foil under furniture legs.
- Move photos, paintings and art objects to a safe, dry location.
- Do not remove books from shelves. Rather, pack them tightly to prevent warping of pages.
- Open drawers, closet and cabinet doors to enhance drying.
- Do not enter a room with standing water while the electricity is still running.
- Do not attempt to extract water with a regular household vacuum.
- Do not lift tacked-down carpet yourself—this requires professional expertise.
- Do not stand on wet carpeting or flooring while electrical appliances are switched on.
- Do not disturb visible mold.
- Do not enter rooms with wet or sagging ceilings, and leave any fans or lights on the ceiling shut off.
